SAN FRANCISCO: A PROVEN PUBLIC POWER PROVIDER
+ San Francisco has been providing clean energy from Hetch Hetchy hydropower for over 100 years, and already operates water and sewer services for all of San Francisco.
+ San Francisco’s public utility currently powers the airport (SFO), zoo, our libraries, Muni, our general hospital, SF City College, the DeYoung and Asian Art Museums, the Ferry Building, port facilities, public schools, parks and more.
+ San Francisco is already providing more than 75% of the electricity consumed in San Francisco through CleanPowerSF and its Hetch Hetchy Power municipal utility.
+ The CleanPowerSF program provides clean energy to about 380,000 San Francisco homes and businesses.
PG&E HAS GIVEN SAN FRANCISCO NO CHOICE
+ For decades, PG&E has obstructed public projects in San Francisco, from affordable housing to transit.
+ Now, with its new filing with federal regulators, PG&E has launched a full-on assault on public power in San Francisco.
+ PG&E’s actions would cost San Francisco taxpayers billions and jeopardize our clean energy future.
+ PG&E’s demands are unworkable. For example, the cost to comply with PG&E’s requirements for streetlights, traffic signals and other small loads would exceed $1 billion.
WE CAN DO EVEN MORE WITH PUBLIC POWER
+ San Francisco public power is affordable. No shareholder payments, profits, corporate salaries, or bonuses. The cost of acquiring PG&E lines is covered by proceeds from delivering power to customers, not from the City’s general fund.
+ Cleaner, climate friendly, San Francisco values. Locally controlled public power means a clearer path to our goal of 100% clean energy by 2030.
+ Safer, more reliable. The City makes strong investments in its utilities from Hetch Hetchy Water and Power to the airport.
STRONG PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR PUBLIC POWER
+ 78% of San Franciscans support switching to public power, according to public polling.
+ The Mayor, the Public Utilities Commission, and the Board of Supervisors support full public power.
